We don’t need a specific reason to wear a formal gown.
So, if you’re a bit self conscious about your mid section there’s ways to combat that.
Spanks or any kind of under garment where it holds things in, is a good choice to hide the bulge.
Also the type of gown or dress matters.
Empire waist gowns are a popular choice for plus sized individuals because they offer both style and comfort. The raised waistline defines the waist and creates an hourglass shape, enhancing the natural curves of the body. It’s been said that this style is a lifesaver for many. The waistline starts just below the bust, allowing the fabric to flow freely over the tummy.
A-line dresses or gowns are another great idea as they are flowy and do not cling to the body.
Another good example is the wrap dress or gown as it isn’t so tight and doesn’t focus on the mid section.
Not sure what looks good on you?
Try on the gown you want to get.
If you’re a plus size, try and follow the guidlines I previously showed you. If the gown is too tight, go up a size.
If you’re on the smaller size, we also follow guidelines. If you wear gowns that are too big, you will look sloppy and frumpy. Try the gown on, if there’s too much fabric around the bustline, waist or hips, then the gown is too big. Try a smaller size. Stick to smaller gowns with a defined waist. Keep playing around with the styles and sizes until you find what works for you.
Mermaid styles look great on smaller frames, as A-line looks fabulous on full figured gals.
Play around with the styles and sizes until you’re comfortable with your pick.
Let’s talk fabrics.
We want a beautiful gown but we still need to be comfortable. Luxurios fabrics like silk and chiffon can add sophistication. Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen can be comfortable and versatile.
Polyester is another choice which washes up well as most gowns need to be dry cleaned.
Most often the gown is the statement and needs no accesseries at all, other than a simple clutch bag which I recommend when going somewhere in a gown.
But if the gown is more simple, a bracelet, earrings, a chocker or statement necklace looks beautiful.
The saying goes, shoes can make or break an outfit and it’s true. But luckily with gowns, most times our shoes don’t show. My personal favorite while wearing a gown is to pair it with ballet flats. Comfortable and out of anyone’s visibility. But if you choose to wear heels, I recommend open toed sandals with heels that aren’t too high. If your ankles start to hurt that could be your heels are too high.
You should walk around in your shoes with the gown to make sure everything is smooth.
There’s many ways to get an affordable gown. You can borrow from a family member or friend. You don’t necessarily have to buy at an expensive retail store if you’re on a budget. Your local or online thrift stores are a perfect idea. There’s different types of second hand stores in every area so research what is near you.
Also, check out your communities resourses, certain places give out free gowns.
I think coverage is important especially as we get older. It’s not always great to show tons of cleavage.
There’s many elegant gowns out there with many different necklines. If you try on a gown and too much is showing to where you aren’t comfortable, keep looking.

Gowns come in an array of colors. The colors you choose are your personal choice.
Just like with other outfits, it’s customary to go with lighter colors in Spring and Summer with florals and pastels and darker colors in Fall and Winter.

Spaghetti straps are thin straps on a gown. When you have thin staps or no straps at all, it’s better to wear your gown with a corset.
A corset goes under a gown so to ensure a put together look so that no bra straps show.
If you’ve already worn your gown or all your gowns and you don’t want them anymore, you can sell them on ebay, craigslist, or places that take clothes on consignment.
You can donate them as well, to high schools, senior citizen facilities or other types of charity.
Fir gowns that can be dry cleaned, this is the way to go.
You can take your gown to the cleaners and they can professionally clean it. If it’s a wedding gown that you want to keep, it can be preserved in a pretty box after cleaning.
If you want to keep your gown but you don’t want to have it dry cleaned, you can purchase a steamer and steam it. Not only will it take out the wrinkles but it will lightly clean your gown if it isn’t too dirty.
Washing your gown by hand is another alternative, only if the instructions on the tag says it’s ok to do.
I don’t personally hand wash anything but it is an option for a thin delicate type of gown.
Some gowns cannot be dry cleaned. Alot of gowns say machine wash. So if you cannot dry clean it and you don’t want to handwash, machine wash is another easier option.
